April Mini Book Haul(NEW BOOKS IN THE HOUSE)

Hello, My Darlings! How are you? How was your April? Did you get any new books? I got some physical books (FINALLY!!!) and I’m so excited. Our bookstores are open, so you can go and buy in person. You can’t even imagine how happy I was to just walk in a bookstore and browse, haven’t done it in a year …and it was AMAZING! So let’s dive into the books.

Captain Ingram’s Inheritance(Rothschild Trilogy #3)by Carola Dunn
joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

Despite their different backgrounds, Lady Constantia Roworth loses her heart to Captain Frank Ingram, recuperating from his wounds at her father’s estate, and is delighted when a surprise inheritance transforms the penniless soldier into an acceptable suitor.

This was a cover buy! I mean…LOOK AT IT! And it’s a historical romance, I’m a sucker for those. It was a such great deal too, just 2 euros for the book(original it was 4 euros, so 50% off). What I didn’t know and there are no mentions in the actual book that it’s the third in a trilogy. But what I understand you can read those out of order, so that’s good. Can’t wait to read it this month!

Emma by Jane Austen

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

Emma Woodhouse is one of Austen’s most captivating and vivid characters. Beautiful, spoilt, vain and irrepressibly witty, Emma organizes the lives of the inhabitants of her sleepy little village and plays matchmaker with devastating effect.

I’m so excited for this one! I have seen the old Emma movie and I really liked ,so seeing this one in the bookstore I knew I’m getting it. The price was great too ,around 3 euros.

Stormbringers(Order of Darkness #2)by Philippa Gregory
joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

Italy, 1453. Luca and Isolde grow more and more attracted to each other as they continue their journey to unravel the mysteries throughout Christendom. But their travels are delayed by the uprising of an intense religious crusade that threatens the balance of the civilized world. Death lingers in the air as war ravages on, but this religious conflict is nothing compared to the arrival of an intense and deadly storm.

Caught in the midst of unimaginable chaos, Luca and Isolde must rely on one another in order to survive.

This is the second book in the Order of darkness trilogy. I already had the first and third book,so I was very glad to find the second book in our local book outlet store. To be honest I don’t like the covers at all…but the story sounds interesting.

Little Cruelties by Liz Nugent- book review

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

50892432This story begins with a funeral. One of three brothers is dead, mourned by his siblings. But which one? And how? And, most importantly: why?

William, Brian, and Luke are each born a year apart in a lower-middle-class Catholic family in 1960s Dublin. William, the eldest, rises to the top of the heap in the film industry as a successful movie producer. Luke, the baby of the family, surprises everyone by morphing into a worldwide pop star. Brian, the compliant middle son, is the eternal adult in the room: the helpful, steady one, the manager of finances and careers.

But none of them is actually quite what he seems. Wounded by childhood, they have betrayed one another in myriad ways, hiding behind little lies that have developed into full-blown treachery. With an unnerving eye for the complexities of families, Nugent delves into the secret life of a deeply troubled household and provides stunning insights into the many forces that shape us from childhood.

The story– 3/5

Setting of the book– 3/5

Smexy Times?– YES

OVERALL – 3/5 STARS

First of all, the synopsis is super misleading …it’s not a thriller, but a family drama. As a family drama, it was good. Really showed how our childhood and different events in our lives can make us who we are today. Did I like any of the brothers? No! Did I like the parents? No…Maybe that’s one of the reasons I wasn’t overall invested in this story. We got 3 different points of view, from all 3 of the brothers thru the ages. I usually don’t like the multiple points of view, but here it worked. So the plot… was executed pretty well, it was easy to ‘keep track” where you were in the story. I liked the writing style, very fast-paced. Overall a good family drama…but not what I expected, that’s why just 3 stars.

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict -book review

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

54221749In December 1926, Agatha Christie goes missing. Investigators find her empty car on the edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur coat left in the car—strange for a frigid night. Her husband and daughter have no knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to find the up-and-coming mystery author. Eleven days later, she reappears, just as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no explanations for her time away.

The puzzle of those missing eleven days has persisted. With her trademark exploration into the shadows of history, acclaimed author Marie Benedict brings us into the world of Agatha Christie, imagining why such a brilliant woman would find herself at the center of such a murky story.

jessica-ruscello-OQSCtabGkSY-unsplash

I will start first by saying that I love Agatha Christie ,her books are so dear to me(it was a big part of my childhood). So after seeing this title and reading this synopsis I knew this was something I would enjoy…and I truly did. This book highlighted interesting parts about Agatha’s life I didn’t know and the struggles of “perfect wives” that women were supposed to be. The mystery part was very well developed in my opinion, and the switching chapters from “now” to “then” was an intriguing part of the story. It’s told from multiple points of view ( Agatha’s and her Husband), and it did give the book an extra mystery element. Overall I really enjoyed it – 4 stars 🌟

The Vine Witch(The Vine Witch #1)by Luanne G. Smith

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

46015350. sy475 For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

53375824

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family’s sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory. For years she’s pushed away any thought of revenge against the man–now a god–responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help: Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

Firsts by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn -book review(and a little RANT)

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

23480844. sy475 Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

So basically it’s a story about a girl who is dealing with her trauma, it’s raw and not pretty. She thinks it’s the right thing to do, but in reality, it’s not. The writing was good, the setting was good too. I enjoyed this book, but my problem…is the ending.  The book didn’t keep everyone accountable for the mistakes they made, there was no therapist for Mercedes to deal with her trauma in a healthy way. Just lots of slut-shame. That’s my only complaint.

Rant(kind of)

This is not really about this book, but more about sex in Ya(young adult) books overall. In the last few years, I have seen a lot of sex in Ya, much more than there was before. Sometimes it’s appropriate(to the story), sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it opens up good discussions, and sometimes it’s not. I’m all about sexual liberation, there is nothing wrong about talking sex or having sex if you are a consenting adult. But when we are talking about actual children(yes, in my mind everyone under the age of 18 is a child), how far is too far? How can we open up a discussion, without promoting unhealthy behaviors. Would love to know your opinion about it.

She Died Famous by Kyle Rutkin – book review

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

46063874. sy475 A Star is Born meets Gone Girl, in this dark and twisted love story with an unforgettable conclusion.

The headline read: “Hollywood Superstar Kelly Trozzo Found Dead.”

With no suspect in custody, authorities turn their attention to best-selling author Kaleb Reed, whose obsessive relationship with the star has been followed by social media and tabloids alike.

In his online confession, Reed claims that his relationship with Trozzo began with a tweet, an unexpected endorsement from the pop star herself. Almost overnight, Reed’s novel garners national attention, and the reclusive writer is thrust into the spotlight. But according to Reed, the endorsement came with a price.

In the days that follow, Reed is invited to Trozzo’s Los Angeles mansion, where he is solicited to write her memoir. Lured by her physical appeal and charisma, Reed delves further and further into Trozzo’s fantasy world, ensnared by a twisted story of betrayal and vengeance.

On the night of Trozzo’s death, Reed finally discovers his true role in this story, as well as the pop star’s alternative ending to his famous novel—one that leads to his arrest.

Set in Hollywood, She Died Famous is an innovative thriller that exposes the dark side of fame and obsession in today’s digital landscape. The story’s shocking twists and unreliable narrator will have every reader asking: Who killed Kelly Trozzo?

This is not what I expected …in a good way! I decided to pick this book up because of the gorgeous cover (I mean…. look at it!😍). The writing style was very unique ,it’s told in blogposts, Newspaper articles, interviews, and police transcripts. Sometimes I felt like it’s real ,Kelly is real…and I’m actually reading a news report about a dead Hollywood it girl. I LOVED it !!!! Truly , such a good book and a unique story. Would definitely recommend for you to check this mystery out. The perfect read for October.

Authors don’t become overnight sensations, or casually land on the New York Times Best Sellers list. We are supposed to fight, claw, write until we outlast the amateurs, master the craft.

She was right. That book changed my life. It changed all our lives. Look where we are, detective. And there’s so much more to uncover.

And because of that, I won’t be just another girl who died famous. My story will be written in the skies.

I read it as a buddy read with the lovely Nishtha from wheresmystory blog. We had so much fun reading and discussing it. So what did I think? Overall I liked it,it was much better then I expected. To be honest, I did read a lot of spoilers about the plot, but I still was surprised about almost everything. The writing style was amazing, easy to follow. I expected Nesta to be a bigger bitch, but she wasn’t and I was surprised. Still love Lucien and Cassian (will protect them forever). Overall it’s a great book, wasn’t really happy with the ending but you can’t have it all.

He’d tied his hair up, a few strands of it falling into his face as he swooped down again and threw a second trout onto the sandy bank where I’d been trying to find a substitute for fishing twine.

“Why should I be scared of an oversized bat who likes to throw temper tantrums?”

Viviane’s sapphire eyes flared as if struck by lightning. “If this war goes poorly, we’ll be bleeding out right alongside you, so I think we damn well get a say in things.”

“That bastard,” Nesta said with utter coolness, though her eyes began to burn, “may wind up being the only person standing in the way of Hybern’s forces and your people.”

Demons in the Bedroom(Paranormal House Flippers #1)by Lidiya Foxglove- book review

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

Have you inherited a creepy old house that needs updated bathroom tiles, a new kitchen, and an exorcism?

Call me: Helena Nicolescu, the best house flipper witch on the east coast.

But I have to admit, I might be in over my head this time. I bought “Lockwood House” at an auction, and the magical community definitely knew something was up, because my rivals were all in on it, including Jake and Jasper, the infuriating wolf shifter twins who think they’re so much better at renovations than me. I overpaid and now I’m stuck with a mess. Floors caving in, 70s carpeting, and…the ghost of an incubus who won’t stop flirting with me while I’m trying to demo.

That’s not the only problem. The former owner’s son seems to be drawn to the place against his own will. My witch radar is going off big time, telling me he has demon blood coursing through his own veins. And the wolves must smell trouble in the air, because they keep sniffing around too. I’ll definitely never tell them that I keep uncovering disconcerting artifacts throughout the house. And more than anything, I won’t admit that they both look pretty good in a tool belt. Why does this house seem like it’s calling trouble to the doorstep?

I have eight weeks to get this done and then I’m putting this mansion on the market and moving on.

This is a medium-burn reverse harem romance!

joanna-kosinska-kKfVAvdBsAw-unsplash

Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price …

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.
