5 Things to see in Latvia (+ some interesting facts )

Photo by Vita Vilcina on Unsplash

giphy (16)Hello everyone! I’m back again with something a little different today. How you all know soon we will enter summer season (yes yes, it’s like 3 months until the start of summer, crazy I know) and with that, it will be vacation time. And if you are (or planning) going to Latvia (or just travelling through ) here are 5 cool things to see in Latvia(In my opinion).

Let’s start with few interesting facts about Latvia

  1. Latvia is Wifi paradise. It has the world’s fourth fastest internet connections, and with over 800 free connection points in Riga, you don’t even need to pay for it. Latvia also holds the world record for the longest ever phone conversation, a 54 hour 4-minute marathon in 2012.
  2. Latvians are a people to look up to. Latvia has the world’s tallest women, with the average lady coming in at an impressive 170 cm. The men are no midgets either, holding fourth place.
  3. Next time you put on a pair of jeans, thank Latvian-born tailor Jacob Davis. In 1871 in Reno, Nevada, he invented denim as a tough material for trousers, then made a fortune in partnership with fabric merchant Levi Strauss.(more cool and interesting facts about Latvia you can find here)

The Freedom Monument

(Latvian: Brīvības piemineklispronounced [ˈbriːviːbas ˈpiɛmineklis]) is a memorial located in Riga, Latvia, honouring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920). It is considered an important symbol of the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Latvia. Unveiled in 1935, the 42-metre (138 ft) high monument of granite, travertine, and copper often serves as the focal point of public gatherings and official ceremonies in Riga. The concept for the monument first emerged in the early 1920s when the Latvian Prime Minister, Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics, ordered rules to be drawn up for a contest for designs of a “memorial column”. After several contests the monument was finally built at the beginning of the 1930s according to the scheme “Shine like a star!” submitted by Latvian sculptor Kārlis Zāle. Construction works were financed by private donations.

Rundāle Palace

Rundāle Palace is the largest and most famous palace in Latvia. This palace was designed and built by Italian architect Franchesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. There are a lot of spectacular rooms to see and a beautiful park around the palace. The local guide will explain everything about the history of the palace and will entertain you with several scary tales from palace’s history. They even say that the palace has its own ghost which appears at night!

Riga Cathedral

Riga Cathedral (Latvian: Rīgas Doms; German: Dom zu Riga) is the Evangelical Lutheran cathedral in Riga, Latvia. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Riga. The cathedral is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Latvia, and is featured in or the subject of paintings, photographs and television travelogues. Like all of the ancient churches of the city, it is known for its weathercock. The church is commonly called the Dome Cathedral, a tautology as the word ‘Dome’ comes from the German Dom meaning ‘cathedral’.

Venta Rapid

Venta Rapid (Latvian: Ventas rumba) is a waterfall on the Venta River in Kuldīga, Latvia. It is the widest waterfall in Europe – 249 metres (817 ft) and up to 270 metres (886 ft) during spring floods. Its height is 1.80–2.20 metres (5.9–7.2 ft) and it changes depending on the water level in the river. The Waterfall formed on Devonian dolostone. It formed an obstacle on Venta – medieval inland shipping route and due to this here formed settlement – contemporary Kuldīga. In the 17th and 19th centuries there were started works for building a shipping route around the falls but works were abandoned.Fishing weirs were carved into the stone. They were used to catch salmon and sturgeon. Due to these fishing devices, Kuldīga used to be called to be a town where you can catch salmon in the air. One could catch as many as 80—100 salmon a day . The fish that didn’t make the jump up the river were swept by the current back into the canals where they were caught in hanging baskets. On January 1, 1997, it was designated a natural monument of Latvia.

Jūrmala

Jūrmala (Latvian pronunciation: [juːrmala] “seaside”) is a city in Latvia, about 25 kilometres (16 miles) west of Riga. Jūrmala is a resort town stretching 32 km (20 miles) and sandwiched between the Gulf of Riga and the Lielupe River. It has a 33 km (21 miles) stretch of white-sand beach, and a population of 56,646, making it the fifth largest city in Latvia. While Latvia was part of the Soviet Union, Jūrmala was a favorite holiday-resort and tourist destination for high-level Communist Party officials, particularly Leonid Brezhnev and Nikita Khrushchev. Although it has many amenities such as beach-houses and concrete hotels remain, some have fallen into disrepair. Jūrmala remains a tourist attraction with long beaches facing the Gulf of Riga and romantic wooden houses in the Art Nouveau style.
